Stella, Get Your Garden On
I don't know about you, but I was just starting to get sick of the rainy, wintery days in my area when I noticed a very slight shift toward longer days.  Finally!  Where I live, in the Pacific Northwest, we don't have the shortest summers, but we also don't have super long ones.  There's no real use even peeking at the gardening catalogs until it's almost St. Patrick's Day, unless you're a truly hardcore gardener who is willing to figure out cool weather crops, plants that can survive a good soaking all season long (and potential snowfall as well).  Frankly, it can be a bit depressing.

Just a few days ago, though, I received the new issue of Martha Stewart Living; when I finally got a chance to read it today, I learned it's their special gardening issue.  Now I'm getting the urge to get my seed list going and my pots ready for some more planting.

Did you know that there are tremendous benefits to planting a garden, other than fresh produce to eat and pretty flowers for your table or entry path?  As writer Peter Jaret starts out by explaining in his article "Reap the Benefits of Gardening", what's good for your yard really can be great for your health.  Come to find out you can burn a couple of hundred calories raking or weeding, more than brisk walking, even!  Digging bumps you over 300 calories, and mowing the yard with a push mower eats up almost 400.

Wow.  Now I'm imagining the difference it would make in the lives of folks to not only switch over to eating more fresh produce and fewer sweets (*guilty look*), but to also have put in the effort and exercise of growing said veggies and such ourselves.  Could be an interesting combo, and you don't have to have tons of acreage either...even a small yard can be landscaped with edible goodies and become a "gym" of your own.  Something to chew on, for certain.

I live & work in the Metro-Seattle area and yeah growing up in the grey can really take it's toll. Though I haven't ever been very successful with an outdoor garden beyond grass and tomato plans. When I'm at work, I do appreciate my co-workers' plants in the office.

One pro about the rain is that great first morning smell you get when everything is clean and washed away. It's a pretty good buzz when you have to walk the dogs out in the rain.

My husband is starting our seeds indoors. We're in southern California, so different issues, but he wants a really early start this year. it's fun and the kids are really excited about watching the seeds sprout.

Marilee: Are you getting snow today? I think I spoke too soon about our brighter days with this one! I'm about an hour south of you and we keep getting nailed. One second it's bright and sunny, then the clouds roll in and we're getting snow and hail. Been going on since about 0700 this morning. Amazing! LOL

Stephanie: I've been thinking about doing some indoor things, perhaps a little kitchen herb garden started up or something. I'm betting it would resolve my gardening itch for a little bit. Hope the indoor starts are helping y'all get your fingers in the dirt too. :-)

Never too early! I've already got two different kinds of lettuce ready to go into a short round planter on the deck! Lettuce is a "cool" weather veggie, spinach is also! With the cost of vegetables this is a great way to cost grocery costs!
We'll be eating fresh lettuce in probably two weeks-plant starts can be found at Fred Meyer here in WA state. "Leaf" lettuce is basically "cut & come again". You can keep cutting off a few leaves from each plant, others will sprout up.
