According to a study released today, workplace policies for families in the United States are weaker than those of several other wealthy countries. Today's USA Today talks about the research gathered by Harvard and McGill University's that proves US politicians need to scale back existing laws, allowing for paid medical leave acts, including paid maternity leave, even for dad.
The article says the Labor Department is examining regulations that give workers unpaid leave to deal with family or medical emergencies. Senator Chris Dodd, a democrat from Conn., plans to announce proposal for a new legislation that would enable workers to have 6 weeks of paid leave. Congress is also expected to reconsider the Healthy Families Act, a bill introduced last session that would require employers with at least 15 employees to provide 7 paid sick days a year.
This would be so nice. Is it me, but why do I feel this sense of guilt when I have to take a day off from my full-time job when my child is sick? Some companies are turning things around, but in general I think working women still get sh__, when they have a sick kid! I hope this legislation goes through and passes! How embarrasing that the US is so far behind.
