Looking for more ways to go green? In this installment to the Easy Environmentalism series, you'll find five super simple ways to get greener - and none of them take more than five minutes to implement. They'll save you greenbacks too. How's that for easy?
- Turn it off if it's not in use. That means lights, computers, and anything else that can be drawing power. Try unplugging cell phone chargers when the phone isn't actually attached - they may be drawing power all day and all night without you realizing it!
- Use every piece of paper twice. I'm so guilty on this one! I like my lists to be nice and neat and I probably go through more paper than I should. Thank goodness my daughter is more than willing to use the back of partially-used papers for her artistic pursuits!
- Time to stock up on light bulbs? Be sure to choose CFLs or other energy-efficient bulbs. As light bulbs burn out, replace them with the greener version.
- Turn down the thermostat for heaters; turn it up for AC units. Cutting the thermostat setting by 1 - 2 degrees can mean a big savings in energy use and your bill!
- Don't run the dishwasher or washing machine unless you have a full load. Bonus tip: Rinse pots and pans or dishes right away or let cooking items soak while you eat. You'll use less water than if you have to rinse caked, dried food off the plates and glasses before loading up. If you have a newer dishwasher you probably don't even need to prerinse, saving even more time and resources.
What quick steps have you taken to green your home and habits lately? Don't be shy - share your ideas!
