Five Healthier Snacks for Toddlers (and Big People Too!)

veggiemix.jpgAmerican Baby magazine has an interesting article in their June 2007 issue that lists what they consider to be great goodies for snacky kids.  Personally I don't think you have to tote a diaper bag to make good use of their suggestions, though.  For instance, many of these would be great to toss in a lunchbox for older kids or an insulated lunchbag for grown-ups headed to the office.  Perhaps not the Gerber snacks, but plenty of these others would really hit the spot when you're feeling like a little nosh on something healthy (and fun).

Here are a few of the suggested alternatives to junk food (and the standard bag o' baby carrots):

  1. Organic Valley Mozzarella Stringles (I say toss some of these in the insulated pocket of the diaper bag for a quick hit of calcium!)  Let the kids check out Ovie's Underground too - fun stuff!
  2. Gerber Mini Fruits: These are available in veggie form too, so you're not stuck with one variety.  You can even sign up for coupons over at their website.
  3. Earth's Best Organic Banana Crunchin' Blocks (Even the American Baby editors admitted they broke into a box of these cookies.  'Nuff said!)
  4. LightFull Chocolate Smoothie.  The perfect size to toss in your purse, diaper bag, cooler, whatever.  (This is why our family loves Horizon Organic's little chocolate milks too!)  I'm thinking the Strawberries & Cream version sounds tasty too.  Besides the coupon offered on the website, you can get a giggle out of the phrase "Fiber is Sexy".  Now that is just sasssssy, ladies.
  5. Glenny's Soy Crisps: All I have to say is I went to their website and they have brownies.  75% organic BROWNIES.  And Blondies.  I'm down with the soy crisps, but I think the brownies sound a little more, uh, interesting.  What say you?

Hi Melonie,

I'm Erin Markey, director of communications for LightFull Foods, and yes, our smoothies are perfect for busy, on-the-go jugglers like yourself! I'm not sure where you're blogging from, but since we're a new, start-up, our smoothies aren't in every grocery store (though we've grown from 0 - 1500 locations in just over a year!). So if you do have trouble finding them, please don't hesitate to email me with your mailing address and I'll be glad to send you some directly! After all, tasting is believing! Thanks for helping to spread the good word about LightFull.

In good health, Erin
