Five Ways to Streamline Your Mornings
titlecabin002.jpgDoes the morning rush at your house make you want to run off to the woods and hide away?  If your morning routine is anything like those of most Workerettes, it could probably use some polishing and streamlining to make life a little easier for you - and anyone else in the house.  Before you start packing for the woods, try some of these ideas for making things roll along a little faster for everyone.
  1. If you're a coffee drinker, invest in a programmable coffeemaker that you can set at bedtime.  You'll save yourself money (and time) by not having to stop at the drive-thru window during your commute.
  2. Make sure your purse, briefcase, diaper bag, and kids' backpacks are restocked with any supplies needed as soon as you get home in the evening.  (That way you don't have to remember to refill the wipes container or sign paperwork over the breakfast table.)
  3. Keep a shelf or table near your main exit so that everyone can grab what they need on their way out the door.  Hanging coat hooks or installing cubbies with storage for frequently worn shoes and essential sports or hobby supplies will make getting to school, work, and practice easier as well.
  4. Are you a frequent library visitor like me?  Pick up a canvas bag for each family member that heads out to the library.  They can check out what they can carry (this will cut down on Mom and Dad having sore shoulders!) and they can be made responsible for making sure the bag is filled back up the night before your weekly (or monthly) trip.  Keeping library items in one area and returning them to their bag after use/reading has helped us virtually eliminate late fees due to items being mixed in with our own possessions or forgotten returns.
  5. Prepare and pack lunches while you're cooking dinner.  If someone is carrying leftovers to reheat, put them in the lunchbox or bag while you're storing up other leftovers after cooking.  Otherwise, set up an assembly line and recruit older kids to help out with dinner, the lunch prep, or both!

Have you created a routine that works perfectly (or close to it) for your family?  How do you get out the door without tearing your hair out as you go?  Blog about it and send me a link, or leave a comment with your tips!  For some other great organizing ideas (many of which will help you get your routine, your home, and your office flowing more smoothly), pop over to Ariane Benefit's Neat Living Blog.  She's a professional who willingly shares lots of wonderful ideas!
