Remember this pedometer, originally mentioned in my post about handy fitness products under $100? Well, a few days after that post I let my husband know that the Champion C9 Bubble Pedometer would make a great (and inexpensive) birthday present.
Can you guess what I got for my birthday? *grin* Yep, I'm the proud owner of a brand spankin' new pedometer and I finally got it all programmed up and tested out. I'm so glad I spotted this gadget!
I've had free pedometers in the past that worked well enough for what I needed then (remember when McDonald's gave them away with their salads?), but this is way better for my needs now! The C9 allows you to input your weight and your stride measurement, as well as whether you want your walking distances calculated in miles or kilometers (in addition to the general number of steps you've taken for the day). Why does it need to know your weight? To figure up the number of calories you've burned through your walking efforts! It even has a clock function. If you'd rather be surprised by how many steps you've taken or how far you've walked and just want to set goals of "I will walk for 20 minutes of my lunch break today", set it to clock mode.
The instructions with the pedometer are very clear and easy to figure out. The mode button is a bit small, even for my fingers (and most folks consider me to be fine-boned), but once you get used to the rocker motion of the button, it gets easier. You've got a mode spot (to change between clock, calories burned, distance and number of steps) along with the obvious set and reset selections. The clip seems to be pretty strong and has survived me walking into the corner of my desk a couple of times already. Hey, at least I was walking, right?
The only downside here? I found out the other day how few steps I take as a home-based worker! I figured since I'm up and down the stairs for things, heading into the kitchen, and the like, I'd be real close to the 10,000 step goal most trainers recommend.
Guess what! I maxed out at just under 3,000 steps. WOW. Big difference, but it was really good to know! I'm not super competitive, but finally having those kind of numbers in front of me is definitely an incentive to stop choosing the most efficient route to spots in the house. In my effort to consolidate trips and time spent doing things like chores, I've made a habit of walking as little as possible and carrying as much as I can. I didn't even think about the fact that I should be trying to walk more during the day since I'm not getting out to the gym a whole bunch.
The nice part is that the baby will be here soon and with a C-section planned, just about the only exercise I'll be allowed for the first 6 -8 weeks is walking. You can bet I'll be wearing my pedometer to see where I start out from the hospital and where I am when I'm feeling recovered.
I think I need a Strollometer next, don't you?
