Do you have a bedtime story that your kids, grandkids, or nieces and nephews love to hear time and time again? It's time to get it in writing, and possibly win some dough while you're at it.
In honor of the 60th anniversary of Goodnight Moon, Johnson's and HarperCollins have teamed up to offer parents a contest where they can share their classic bedtime story. The winning entry will even be illustrated and published as a limited edition picture book - what an opportunity for you women writers, eh?
The official rules are on their website, including manuscript length, age range to write for, and the like. Once you get your story typed up in a Word document or other file (perhaps you already have it there, just waiting for an editor to swoop it up?), you can submit it online as well. The deadline is 15 July 2007, so if your bedtime classic is still in your mind, you've got a bit of time to type it up and fiddle with it before submission - but don't wait too long!
The best part of this to me is that for every entry received, the sponsors will donate a copy of Goodnight Moon to Reach Out and Read, a non-profit that promotes early literacy. When my daughter was born, the hospital presented us with a board book copy of it, which she reads to this day in all its well-worn glory. With baby brother on the way, it's time to go get another copy just for him. Something tells me some books will be passed on, but this one she won't want to share!
