Moving Day Jitters: Tips and Tidbits

movingsupplies.jpgAs I've mentioned plenty of times recently, we're in the process of moving from the Pacific Northwest to California.  With a six-year-old and a newborn in tow, this should be an interesting road trip to say the least!

Obviously the baby doesn't really care where he is as long as he's dry, fed, and snuggled (and not sucking down crystals from a faulty bink).  However, this is quite the event for my older child.  She's only moved once before and is still getting used to the whole "military brat" concept.  Having grown up in the military and also having moved plenty of times as an adult, it's sometimes easy for me to forget how hard this is for her to fathom and adjust to.

There are ways to make it work as smoothly as possible, though.  Granted you can't foresee every potential roadblock or stressor, but if you're at least somewhat prepared for questions and concerns your kid(s) may voice, it'll be easier on everyone.

I just found out that Century21 (yes, the real estate agency) offers a ton of online resources for moving with kids.  They've even broken them down by sections such as before the move, during the move, and after the move.  I'm loving the scavenger hunt idea, personally.  I think I'll make one of these Bingo boards too!  I can remember that the first thing my mom did when we arrived in a new town was take me to find the local library.  Since my daughter and I go to the library on a certain day each week (aptly named "Library Day" *chuckle*), I did a search last week for information about the library branches that will be available to us when we get settled.  I found a bunch of information, including addresses so that as soon as we have our housing lease we can get a library card and get back into our routine - after my daughter finds the library for us!
