Dealing with a deadbeat parent who won't cough up the dough? According to this news report, a fairly new option called the Passport Denial Program may convince the obligor to finally pay up on that back child support in order to "get right with the man" (and get his or her passport).
Apparently, persons owing $2,500 or more in back support can be denied their requested passport; with more folks' travel falling into a category that calls for a passport these days, it's one more handy step for making them wake up and smell the coffee - and write a check, while they're at it.
Looking at the large sums mentioned in the article, I'm personally flat out shocked. I've heard any number of stories about deadbeats who will do everything from moving out of state, changing jobs every few months, and a gazillion other things to get around garnishments and paying their dues, but some of these really bowled me over. Can you imagine getting a $100,000 lump sum in back support? It really makes me wonder about the person who refused to pay and then suddenly sent in such a payment in order to get his passport.
Ladies, spread the word if you know someone who is having difficulty getting her child support payments in a timely manner. If the deadbeat wants to go for a little ski vacation in Canada, he's gonna need a passport - and he may not be able to get it unless he starts writing checks.

Wow, I am amazed that no one talks about dead beat mothers. My boyfriend owes back child support, true, but he took custody of his two children about 8 years ago. The mother is the one who was going in and out of jail. The mother now owes him approx $40,000 in back child support. He owes child support from a previous time. He has full custody, she has nothing to do with the children. She owes him over $30,000 from these last years. But she knows how to work to system, has two new babies from another guy, and is on welfare. The system can't collect from her, and frankly, they could care less. since they didn't front the money to him in form of assistance, they don't care. This is seriosly wrong, let's not talk about dead beat dads, but dead beat mothers for a change.
