Product Recall #2: Raleigh "Cadent" Bicycles

bikerecallMy husband and I were just checking out bikes at Costco yesterday so this product recall caught my eye (as did the fact that Raleigh is based in Kent, WA, a scant half hour from where I lived until the end of July)!  Luckily we were looking over a different manufacturer's products, but this is still good to know while we're in the market for bikes.  That coulda been bad, eh?

Raleigh America Recalls Bicycles; Forks Can Break Causing Loss of Control

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firms named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Products: 2007 Raleigh Cadent Bicycles with Carbonage Carbon Forks

Units: About 1200

Importer: Raleigh America Inc., of Kent, Wash.

Manufacturer: Carbonage Technology, of Baoan, China

Hazard: The forks can break during normal use, causing the rider to lose control, fall and suffer serious injuries.

Incidents/Injuries: Raleigh America has received three reports of forks breaking resulting in injuries including a dislocated shoulder, a concussion and a broken jaw.

Description: The recall involves the 2007 Raleigh Cadent 1.0, Cadent 2.0 and Cadent Carbon bicycle models with carbon forks. "Raleigh" is printed on the down tube of the bicycle, and the model name is printed on the top tube.

Sold at: Raleigh America dealers nationwide from January 2007 through June 2007 for between $660 and $1930.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled bicycles immediately and return them to place of purchase. Raleigh bicycle dealers will replace the forks at no charge.
