Times can be tough and days can be rough when you're a working mom. Whether you work in an office, at a brick-and-mortar store, or in a corner of your own home, if you've got a family to raise you're going to be pulled in 50 directions at once. I can sure empathize - I'm feeling it every day too! That's why I thought those of you who are working moms would enjoy this little shot of sunshine. Read on for a little pick-me-up from one working mom who knows what it's like to try to have it all.
Working Moms- We Just Do It!
By: Regina Boyett
“How do you manage to work full-time downtown, get your kids to a birthday party and dance lessons, and take care of your home?!”
“I don’t know. I just do it.” Such is the mantra of millions of moms whose careers have led them to an office in a building instead of an office that’s a few steps away from their living room.
When the queen is away from her castle for nine to ten hours a day, the mere act of scheduling becomes a fine art. “When can I clean the bathrooms? Hmm…looks like I can fit that in around 8:47PM, after a quantitative analysis of Guess How Much I Love You with my five-year-old, followed by the nightly trek to Mt. Laundry. And there is a meeting tomorrow at 10:00AM with the marketing department at the office. Good. I’ll have just enough time to inhale my McBreakfast and prepare the report that I didn’t finish yesterday because I left the office early to take my daughter to get stitches in her finger.”
As with any choice we’ve made in life, we experience mixed emotions about the different roles we have to play every day. There is a rush of excitement for a working mom when she lands a huge account with her team; but that pales in comparison to her pride when her child masters his 12’s in multiplication. The anticipation of attending a trade show for two days, out of town, somehow melts away as she looks at the dot of maple syrup on her linen pants from her toddler’s waffles that morning. As she navigates the endless sea of traffic and laughs out loud at the morning radio show, she sits back and wishes that she could have gone on the field trip that day to the symphony with her daughter’s class.
“There’s got to be a way to have it all,” she muses while gazing enviably at her stay-at-home friend, who wears comfier clothes and keeps a tidier home. Guess what, Working Mom: you do have it all. Rest in the knowledge that love for your family is no smaller because you eat your lunch in a break room instead of dining room. You’re doing what it takes, and giving yourself, to provide your family the absolute best for their lives.
