It's that time of year again, ladies. The leaves are changing color and the ghost and goblin costumes are appearing on shelves, as are the pink goodies: flip-flops, manicure sets, sweatshirts, golf caps, pins, keychains ~ you know the deal.
Yes, it's October and we're beginning Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I don't know about you, but I've noticed the pink stuff popping up on shelves at my local stores over the past few weeks. Heck, I was drawn in myself at Target thanks to the pink cooking utensil set, and I'm a devoted Americana kitchen decorator. Each of us is probably interested in helping a cause - but at what cost?
Today I spotted an excellent blog post from Jennifer Chait over at The Office Stuffer. Thanks to Jennifer I'm feeling more informed, and I hope you'll leave here better educated as well. You see, the Think Before You Pink campaign is a project focused on educating consumers such as ourselves about the companies who are not actually contributing as much as we think they are - or who are contributing to cancer's progression with the ingredients in their products while they are contributing to breast cancer awareness and research!
Last year I began a series of posts about BCA and I tried to only point you toward companies that were donating proceeds to legitimate foundations and weren't quietly limiting themselves to a convenient dollar amount while charging an arm and a leg for their products - products you may think you were helping the cause with by making the purchases. I had no idea about this project or group then; I plan to read over their site further and I hope you will too.
Shopping alone won't fund a cure, obviously, but perhaps with enough combined projects and foundations we'll eliminate a killer.
