What sort of things have you done to your house to make your life run more smoothly? Since we don't own our home, anything we do has to be temporary. No structural changes, no remodeling (shame - I'd like to do something to the kitchen cabinets *chuckle*) - it must be removable and go with us.
That means no building in a mudroom in the garage area or creating a wall of built-ins to hold bags, umbrellas, coats, outgoing mail, or a message board. Luckily I came up with a way around the situation that works out quite well for us.
Just in from our front door we have a nice long wall where I've put a small table with a drawer in it. Above it I mounted a whiteboard. The drawer holds dry erase markers and other essentials. On the whiteboard I write our weekly menu plans, messages/reminders for other family members, and sometimes grocery items that I'm afraid I'll forget before I get around to writing a list.
Outgoing mail goes on the top of the table, as well as small items that need to be put away the next time I go down the hallway to the bedrooms. The best part? The whole shebang is thin enough that it doesn't block the walkway, and it's diagonal from my home office corner. That comes in handy when I finally sit down to write up those grocery lists.

Renting can be a pain can't it? We also rent. I bought one of those things with the bench on it & it has the hooks for coats right on. Makes such a difference! I like the idea of the table & white board. We needed something for sitting though. Might have to see if I have room for a little table for mail & a board for notes, great idea!
