Have you heard of the One Laptop Per Child Organization? I've seen the name here and there, and honestly, I wondered whether the folks who were making commitments to purchase the laptops would actually follow through. Apparently some of them are a bit slow in the follow-through department, so the organization has opened up a unique opportunity for people in the US and Canada who are interested in helping out.
The "Give 1 Get 1" program is going for only two weeks, from today until 26 November. When you donate $400 for a laptop for the program, you GET one of the laptops, which you can then donate locally or keep for your own child. Business owners and management Workerettes: take note here! You could do a serious good deed with this donation program - donate both laptops in your business name and you can help at the local and worldwide levels. How cool is that?
The always-on-top-of-things Dory Devlin has the scoop on the program as well as the technical specs of the laptops. Keep in mind these units aren't meant for you to build a business or telecommute - they are kid-focused and purposely created to be energy-efficient, resilient starter machines. Don't bother thinking that you'll donate one and keep the other to get things done at work. But for a kiddo in the 7 to 11 age range who is just starting out with technology, these laptops should more than suffice.
Imagine the Christmas spirit you can share with a double donation though, ladies. I say again: how cool is THAT?
