Trying to book travel at any time of the year can be quite interesting; as shocking as it might be to some of us, there are folks still trying to get their arrangements made for this Christmas and New Year's. I think you'd have to be really lucky to score a bargain at this point, unless you're already hunting for next summer's fares, not this holiday's.
No matter which you're trying to book, there are ways to save time and possibly a few bucks, according to an article I read in the November 2007 issue of Parents magazine. Their picks and warnings?
- Kayak.com: Their pick for finding the cheapest flights. Their warning: it's only a search site, not a booking site, so you'll be going through a few more steps to book.
- Expedia.com: Their pick for booking full vacations/trips with a hotel and airfare. Their warning: Small booking fees that add up per ticket. (Their tip: if you're only booking a flight, find it on Expedia then book through the airline to skip the fee.)
- Orbitz.com: Their pick for the busy traveler who wants to get it done "quick and easy". The warning: bold listings that don't include taxes and fees, making you think you're getting off cheaper than you are. (BOO! HISS!) Be sure to read the fine print with the actual total.
- Honorable mentions: Farecast.com, Tripadvisor.com and Travelzoo.com.
Good luck if you're trying to get a seat for Christmas. As for me, I'll be searching out fares for next year's visitation trips. Let's hope everybody gets a good deal with some smart searching and planning!
