President Gordon B. Hinckley, leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away on Sunday evening at the age of 97. President Hinckley became the 15th President of the LDS Church (also known as "Mormon" Church) in 1995.
Hinckley was well-known and well-loved within the worldwide church, but also known outside of the church membership for his kindness, his humble nature, and his combination of wit and wisdom.
Latter-day Saints the world over simultaneously mourn Hinckley's passing while taking solace from the belief that the leader who worked so hard for mutual understanding among various faiths and charitable efforts will now be reunited with his wife, Marjorie Pay Hinckley, who preceded him in death in 2004.
Funeral services for President Hinckley will take place this Saturday, 2 February, in Salt Lake City, UT. They will be broadcast via satellite to more than 6,000 Church buildings worldwide in 69 languages.
