Is getting a haircut on your list of things to do in the near future? You might want to take a moment to consider donating it to a wig-making progam if you're taking off a good amount of length.
Many of us have heard of these sort of programs, but the most well-known seems to be the Locks of Love campaign. I just recently learned of another, sponsored by Pantene, called the Beautiful Lengths program.
I didn't realize it, but a donation of as little eight inches of hair can be useful in making a wig for a woman dealing with cancer-related hair loss. So far more than 23,000 women have donated ponytails to the program and around 2,000 wigs have been distributed. According to the "advertorial" I read in the January 2008 issue of Better Homes & Gardens, another 1,000 wigs are in the making.
If a hair donation program sounds like an option for you, head on over to either program's website. You can find details about the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program here. Already have short hair? They also gratefully accept donations of time, money, and more, of course!
(As with any charity donation, do your "due diligence" before making a donation - whether it be of hair, money, your time, or anything else. While I was trying to find a link for the Locks of Love campaign I learned there's some controversy about their program - I'm sure that happens with many charities and non-profits, so make sure you feel comfortable with who you're donating to and what you're giving up.)
