With only a week to go before Valentine's Day arrives, the chocolate and flower ads are alllll over the place. A friend and I were chuckling recently about the old joke about the man who buys his wife something useful (such as an iron or Crock Pot) as a way of showing he loves her - and ends up with the iron on the back of the head for his troubles.
Despite all the retail craziness and the jewelers insisting that a woman doesn't (or shouldn't!) feel loved unless she has something sparkly in a velvet box or stuffed bear, I don't think I'm the only gal on earth who would rather have something she genuinely wants or will use to death during "gift-giving" holidays. Then again, I'm not known for being the most stylish or materialistic anyway. But I bet if you stop and think about it, there are certain things that would mean a lot more to you - or come in a lot handier - than chocolates that'll go to your (okay, MY) baby pooch or flowers that'll just die anyway.
In honor of Thursday Thirteen, here's a list of things - yes, even a few sparkly ones - that would mean a lot to me and wouldn't end up in the back of anybody's head. *chuckle* They not be exactly what you'd like, but they may give you some ideas for someone you know!
Read on:
- A camo baby sling (for showing my little guy some lovin' too)
- A Strollometer
- The Kid Who Climbed Everest (okay, anything by Bear Grylls)
- The Shooters
- A Sigg or Klean Kanteen bottle that fits in the stroller cupholders (preferably red!)
- Raising Baby Green by Dr. Alan Greene (hmm, maybe some of these are more for Mother's Day, eh? haha)
- Green This! by Deirdre Imus (or any of the other many green cleaning books that pop up over at Amazon in this category!)
- The Waltons on DVD (did you know there are enough seasons of these that they take up several search pages???)
- Some new UFC DVDs (I suppose that'd be a gift for the whole family!)
- A really good book about learning to sew
- A new bed frame (maybe this one at Ikea?)
- Subscriptions to Kiwi and Adoptive Families
- A bottle of CKOne (there, is that more romantic?)
Want to participate in Thursday Thirteen? Head on over to their website. But don't go until you leave a comment here with some atypical V-day gifts on your wishlist!
