I've been reading snippets about this whole Spitzer prostiution sting situation and I've had a lot of thoughts about it - namely that the old adage is true: the bigger they are, the harder they fall.
When any person puts himself (or herself) out on the radar on a rampage against injustices - whether real or personally perceived - he creates a very large target. I'm sure there are people out there who laughed with glee when this big name crimefighter came crashing down off his pedestal with a flurry of verbal tar-and-feathering. Some will say his political career is over - but didn't we say the very same thing about Bill Clinton (and isn't he keeping his face in the press, even without his wife running for President)? Something tells me that this will be just a moment in time, albeit a really crappy one, for Governor Spitzer.
The real question is what happens to his family?
I'm sure there are plenty of folks - divorce attorneys, especially - just droooooling in the wings to find out what Silda Wall Spitzer will do next. And that brings to mind a question in a lot of women's minds, be they single, married, divorced, or widowed.
Should Silda have stood beside her husband during his public admission of guilt? I say yes. Here's why:
- She shows herself to be the bigger person. I know next to nothing about this woman, but by putting on a brave, if distraught, face and standing there as her husband admits to have gotten "caught with his hand in the nookie jar", as my own husband so bluntly phrased it, she shows she can handle a crisis. She shows that she can be a rock. After all, her hubby didn't "just" cheat - he spent a sh*t ton of money doing it. NOT a ride on the ferris wheel for her; this is big stuff and it sucks.
- No matter what goes on behind closed doors, or what the Spitzers' ultimate choices regarding their marriage will be, she has presented a united front. Even if it was just for the children, or for the press, or for the people of the state of New York, she did it. Thank her. For you know not when it may be you some day - and now you've gotten an example of how to handle it in an outwardly professional manner. She may have been plotting and screaming in her mind, but she held it together and kept her mouth shut. That says plenty for her future, whatever it holds. Wouldn't you like to have employees like that?
- As old-fashioned as it may seem, ladies have good manners - and these actions are that of a lady. Another example some women could learn from. Just because someone is being an ass to you doesn't mean you have to be one back (at least, in public).
- Should she choose to stay with her husband, an outward appearance of unity and support goes a long way. How would you like to "lose it" on your cheating spouse in public, only to stay with them and truly look a fool? Exactly.
- A strong woman will keep herself going by sitting back, trying to remain calm, and looking at every angle and every possibility for keeping her family together, and how to support herself and her children if she chooses to not remain with that man.
I'm not saying she should stay with him; I'm not saying she should dump him like a hot potato. It's easy to say "sign here, here and here; send the checks to this account" is what you'd say until and unless it happens to you. There comes a point where a person has to make that choice, and all the women in the world watching the news and having their own venting sessions won't mean a thing.
However, if we look again at women who've stood by while men in VERY public fields admitted to (or denied and denied and denied then admitted to) infidelity - well, if Hillary Clinton is any proof that a scorned woman can show an amazing amount of professionalism that will later catapult her to a unique future of her own...who knows what the future holds for Mrs. Spitzer et al? After all, she's got herself one of them thar law degrees too - could she be a future President?
Hmmmmmmmm. Now there's a point to ponder.
