Memorial Day: Shop, Travel, or Stay Home?

coolers.jpgIt's that time of year again - Memorial Day weekend has arrived here in the USA.  Some of you may have a four-day weekend, others may have a three-day - and others may be working the whole weekend and then some!  Depending on your field, you may be enjoying the federal holiday or busting your butt behind a cash register.  (Ah yes, I semi-fondly recall those retail days, folks.  Despite the fact that my birthday is the 30th - the REAL Memorial Day - I always tried to work.  The overtime was handy!)

I think the stores have been gearing up for a while now, but to be honest, I haven't really had the urge to do much shopping.  Maybe it is a carryover from those retail days; I'd rather be paid to be in crowds and lines instead of paying them for the hassle - er, privilege.  With gas prices the way they are we're watching the tank as well.  My family actually did our road trip last weekend (to the Whole Children, Whole Planet Expo near L.A. - more on that another day).  I have to admit I thought gas prices where I live were scary until we got closer to Los Angeles and really saw the jump.  EEK.  Any urge I had to travel this weekend was shot in the foot right then and there. It really made me feel for the truckers who are trying to keep this nation's shelves filled while fighting the rising gas costs themselves.  And now we've got police departments parking their cars due to rising gas prices?

Something tells me I'm not the only one who will be spending most of the weekend sticking close to home and maybe picking up a few essentials here and there, without taking advantage of any huge sales.  I'd like to head to the hardware store for some seedlings and such, but I'm willing to bet you won't spot my family at any of the department stores raking in the deals.

If you'll be shopping, do pop by and tell me what you pick up.  I'm all for sharing a cheer on a great bargain (and if you like, you can even taunt me for missing out).  And for those of you working the weekend - take care and remember: when the cranky customers have got you to the breaking point, just picture them naked in a snowstorm.  A little tip my mom passed along that always worked for me.  *chuckle*

Be sure to take time out to remember the real reason for Memorial Day, too.  It's not just about sales, picnics, and road trips.  Memorial Day was originally a day set aside to remember the Union soldiers who were lost during the Civil War.  It is now a time for us to remember all of our fallen service members.  As a military spouse, those of you who have lost a loved one during any war or military action have my thoughts and prayers this weekend.  To the rest of you Workerettes: drive safe and enjoy!
